NORMAN J. HENDRIKS

If I have to introduce myself I would just say that I'm a simple guy.
Not much to add to that. I got simple hobbies, simple interests and simple ideals. If you must know more about me I would just say I'm simply a multidisciplinary designer in various fields born and raised in the Netherlands with international experience.

The multidisciplinary part consists of industrial-, graphic-, product- and web design, some bit of web development and also a hint of branding.

However, the thing I'm most proud of is the simplicity in my way of living. Because of this simple mindset I'm very adaptable to any situation and learning new skills is a simple feat.

JUST MY EXPERIENCE

Throughout my major on Industrial Product Design I worked closely with a variety of entities like the municipality of the Hague and Philips. I also gained international experience during my internship at Indigo in Indonesia where I worked on some big projects regarding brand spanking new shopping malls. It was awesome to say the least.

With the experience I gained from my graduating internship at Smaac, one of the leading marketing strategists in the Netherlands, I took the next step in my career. I worked as a freelancer for Comon Invent until I became a full time employee tasked with rebranding everything that is Comon Invent.

Products, communicating on an international level, graphics, small and big companies, websites, completing group and solo projects, coordinating events, researching and analyzing, managing projects and task, DTP. I consider my experience simple and broad.

Rebranding the company image from the ground up.
Comon Invent BV is global service provider of wireless air monitoring systems. Founded in the 90's the company soon became successful. Unfortunately the company image was still stuck in the olden days. So the task was given to me to modernize their image.

Considering the service that Comon Invent provides I toke the liberty to bring focus to their iconic dot of the logo in the main product. Aside from that, I brought forth a set of guidelines for the company to follow so there's a certain continuity in the company image. The one thing I wasn't allowed to change was the logo appearance. So I didn't.

Showing the way in office skyscrapers.
The company I spend my internship at in Indonesia was fairly active in the signage business. Considering that Jakarta is, to this day, one big construction site the signage business is of course booming. New buildings need new signs. Thamrin Brothers group had a new building in need of new signs.

At PT Indigo I was the main product designer. The graphics of the signs were created by a different team and once these graphics were delivered I could get to work. In accordance to the assignment given to me the main material being used for this project was stainless steel. Every sign in the whole building is constructed with this material being folded in square shapes. These 'boxes' of folded stainless steel could easily be repositioned around the connection pieces.

Giving an old website a well deserved make over.
Even before I started working at Comon Invent BV I noticed immediately that their website came out of the stone age. It was outdated, tacky and just a mess of pages. Well they hired me for a reason.

Apart from the looks, the content also came from way back. Managing content more easily is a must, so a CMS was put in place. Teaming up with others I gathered up the content that was needed for this project. Polishing it and making it logical was a difficult task, especially when you consider that Comon Invent wasn't even sure what they wanted on the website.

After going at it with no clue of what to do for a really long time I managed to deliver a product that needed almost no revisions. Giving Comon Invent the thing they didn't even knew they wanted or needed.

Conveying information in a brand new shopping mall.
Shopping malls are constantly constructed in the city of Jakarta, Indonesia. PT Indigo has positioned itself that these malls look at them for signage. Kemang Village Mall was one of these malls. Located in an expat filled area what better than to contract an expat for this project.

Just like the Thamrin project graphics were made by an other team before I could dig my claws into this assignment. Apart from the usual signs that I had to design, there was also need for an information desk, an information board and some peripherals like trashcans.

The theme of this mall are leaf patterns. This pattern can be seen almost everywhere in the mall. Of course that includes the products that I worked on.

Imagining a new concept product for air monitoring.
Air monitoring is done with the help of a network of eNoses. Devices the size of very big oranges. They were designed on looks, even though they aren't really that pretty. The biggest flaw of these devices are that they are not easy to produce and construct.

In the midst of my industrial design major the task was given to my team to find a solution. We focused on modularity by using the same components for multiple purposes. The result is what you see before you.

The orb is constructed by two identical halves instead of 7 almost identical disks that are used for the current eNose. This cuts down production time and costs. We 3D printed our concept to test the functionality. Unfortunately some research is needed to make this a successful product, but the concept that was presented was met with great praise.

Designing the identity of music and friends.
A group of close friends came to me with the request of designing their logo for their band. Not just any band but a Indonesian Muslim band.

Practically growing up together they become more than friends and more like a family. Their band name was appropriately called Sahabat. This is an Indonesian word and it means something along the lines of friends for life or very close friends. Knowing them personally I wanted to create something that represented them by combining the western society they grew up in while maintaining their Muslim heritage.

I got my inspiration from Arabic calligraphy and made the logo you see before you. By removing the the letter 'a' I could metaphorically squish the band name together and form the word SHBT, representing the meaning of the word by bringing the letters closer together. The letters SHBT are designed in such a way that they look Arabic.
